Apple Podcasts In iOS 14

Despite being the most used podcast app in the world, Apple has kept Apple Podcasts relatively simple. iOS 14 makes a few exciting changes, focusing on curation and podcast discovery.

What’s new in iOS 14?

In an effort to keep up with Spotify’s big play into podcasting, and to get ahead of Google Podcasts as they begin to find their feet, Apple Podcasts has received perhaps its biggest update yet in Apple’s iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur.

Most notably, Apple has introduced “Smarter Listen Now”, which includes a “personal episode queue that makes it easier to resume where you left off. Find the latest episodes of shows you already love or discover a new episode picked just for you.”

This is a part of Apple’s strategy to begin curating personalised suggestions for users, and learn from podcasts previously already consumed.

You can also see from the screenshots above Apple has made more subtle changes, switching around the “Browse” and “Library” tab in an effort to increase the discoverability of podcasts.

Apple Podcast Exclusive Content

Along with a few changes relating to personalisation in iOS 14, Apple has recently pushed itself into the original content creation game with new daily podcast, Apple News Today. With Spotify exclusively snapping up podcasts with Joe Rogan, Kim Kardashian and Michelle Obama, Apple News Today is Apple’s first play in starting to compete with Spotify

With Apple filling the position for a Product Manager interested in personalisation for Apple Podcasts, the next 12 months will be an interesting period to see how Apple goes about competing with Spotify.
