Submitting your podcast to Google Podcasts is a very similar process to submitting your podcast to the likes of Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Submitting Your Podcast To Google Podcasts Using Google Podcasts Manager
Google have upped their presence in podcasting by offering a Podcast Manager to add and interact with the podcasts you own.
Before we submit your podcast to Google Podcasts, we need to make sure we are abiding by Google’s podcast guidelines.
- Check your RSS feed – <link> and <itunes:owner>
An important first step is checking that your RSS feed contains a <link> element. Most podcast providers ask for the website in your show information, if you have entered this in, it is most likely displayed in the <link> element in your RSS feed. Make sure to search your feed to be sure – it should be right near the top!
The next thing we need to check in the RSS feed is the <itunes:owner> element. The owner element is how Apple, Spotify, Google and every other podcast manager verifies that you are the owner of the RSS feed. Search your RSS feed for the <itunes:email> element and double check that you can access the email address listed – verification codes will be sent here!
- Updating your website homepage
Now that we have double-checked the RSS feed for the website link and owner elements, we’re ready to move on to including our RSS feed on our website so Google can index it.
In the <head> of your website, use the following template to add an HTML tag that points to your RSS feed:
<link type="application/rss+xml" rel="alternate" title="Podcast_title" href="Podcast_feed_url"/>
Here’s an example of the HTML tag we used for The Daily Talk Show:
<link type="application/rss+xml" rel="alternate" title="The Daily Talk Show" href="https://feeds.simplecast.com/6_oR5wn4"/>
This can get a bit tricky if you haven’t had experience with adding HTML tags to your website, but if you’re using something like WordPress you can use a plugin to add it.
- Submit your podcast RSS feed to Google Podcasts Manager
We’re onto the last step! We’ve updated our website and double-checked our RSS feed, and now we’re ready to submit our podcast feed to Google Podcasts Manager.
Head over to Google Podcasts Manager to enter a feed (you will need to sign in to a Google Account), and go through the dialogue prompts.
- Paste your feed into the text box
- Confirm your podcast by looking at the feed preview
- Send a verification code to the email listed in your RSS feed
- Enter the verification code to verify your ownership
You’ve done it! You’ve submitted your podcast to Google Podcasts! It can take up to a week for your podcast to show up in Google Podcasts, but most of the time, a few days will be all that it needs. You can use Google’s Podcast Publisher Tools to get the direct link to your podcast.
One of the most exciting things about being on Google Podcasts is how your podcast shows up in search results. Underneath The Daily Talk Show’s website, you can see Google has pulled in episodes from Google Podcasts automatically.
Including your RSS feed in your website header makes this possible by letting Google know that this podcast is relevant and is linked to this website.
